cdev: Are any of you prezi users?

Mike Donaldson from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

talwar: Prexzi ?

talwar: What is prezi?

talwar: Pretty Cool Prezi. .

Mike Donaldson: what is it? Presentation software?

Chris AKIN: Prezi is a program that allows more flexibility in presentations of web resources

cdev from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

Dan Sharp: only for apple or for pcs as well?

Dan Sharp: only for apple or for pcs as well?

talwar: Check out Prezi.com.. Web bases.. OS independent

cdev: I love the possibilities and the interface but

cdev: I've had problems using it with the bandwidth at JIS

cdev: and I also can't seem to download the local version/player

TonyB from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

cdev: anyone else had that issue?

Dan Sharp: yeh its loading

Chris AKIN: bandwidth and INdonesia rarely collide in the same sentence (worse in Bali!)

jutecht from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: Busy putting names in...but will keep up with the session from afar. :)

cdev: Appreciate the empathy Chris, very 21st century of you

acerace from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

Chris AKIN: :)

Chris AKIN: focus needs to be on ACCESS not on filters

jutecht: If you want to respond some someone in a chat directly. Use the @ symbol. Example @chrisAkin's focus on the access totaly agree.

acerace: is anyone having intermittent internet access in Palawan 1

talwar: no internet issues here.. Slow, but n real issues

jutecht: Blog is all set up for those that are just joining the cohort.

cdev: Did he say we have a moral obligation to engage with facebook? Not sure I heard that was it because I was chatting?

acerace: @talwar thanks - maybe the speed is what is slowing me down :)

talwar: Thanks Jeff

Chris AKIN: Digital charters - any good samples out there?

Derk from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

Derek from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: @Chrisakin can you give me more info?

acerace: @jutecht Jeff, please could you reset the blog log on for me - Tony Race. Thanks!

jutecht: @acerace doing it now......

Mike Donaldson: What do others have in terms of interavtive white boards? We have a few and have taken the same approach as Canadian in HK. Problem is, other Shanghai schools seem to be putting smartbaords in everyroom.

Mike Donaldson: Not sure we can afford "not" to have smartboards in Shanghai now - aside from the question of whether they are being used!

Chris AKIN: @jutecht: in Zurich in preparation to go 1:1 we had to look at how/if the model would change the way the community communicated and related, so as part of the prep work we created a Digital Charter (essential agreements on how it would all work out)

talwar: We have @ Chinese InteranationaI School jut got funding for IWB across all classrooms.. It was a vision from the administrators and parents.. Thus at the moment we have 80 IWBs.. promethean in primary and smart in middle/high school.. Thid Decemeber we should have about another 25 installed and that will give all learning spaces IWBs

TonyB from x.x.x.3 left the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: @ChrisAkin's something like this? http://blogs.isb.ac.th/blogging-guidelines/

Derek: I'm hoping we can avoid IWB's and go 1 to 1 from Gr 1 - 12 and keep the technology in the hands of the students

Paul-Guangzhou from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: @Derek I like that idea. 1:1 trump IWB.

Paul-Guangzhou from x.x.x.3 left the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: @talwar IWB are great for getting teachers out from behind the computer, but we're finding they are still teach focued classrooms for the most part with the teacher in front of the room. We're working on changing this model but it's slow pedegogical change.

cdev: imo, the value of IWB is about the software and the sharing of a presentation experience

jutecht: @cdev agree the software is where the power is. Just did a really cool project with Notebook and 3rd graders...remind me to show it to you. :)

cdev: I've seen some teachers use SmartRecorder in really interesting ways then posting the video for students to review; ie in math for seeing the process of solving a particular type of problem

Chris AKIN: @jutecht: looks great, thanks a bunch

Derek: Agreed cost of IWB's are high but the marketing people like the wow factor. Not a great rationale for developing an educational programme!

Tony from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago

jutecht: @cdev we have the same kind of great things happening with the software....and I think that's part of it...again focusing on the learning and now the hardware of the IWB.

talwar: SmarRecorder has been great for our science and math classes.. They are posted on our portal for a week and auto deleted.. The students love it

Tony: What does IB stand for?

Mike Donaldson: Any thoughts on best grade level/subject area for introducing IWB's if starting from the beginning?

Derek: IB = International Baccalaureate

jutecht: @MikeDonaldson Good question.....I would start with teachers who have a understanding of how IWB changes learning rather than a grade level. When we rolled them out at Shanghai we made teacher apply for them....letting them know that there was some accountability to having one. That things change in the classroom and that we expect to see it used as a IWB and not just a projector.

talwar: IWB - Interactive White Board

Tony: What kind of bandwidth are school's able to get...the most we have been able to get is 2MB where we are located in Manila

Tony: I mean, what b/w is needed for all the things we are seeing for integrating technology in a 1:1 school?

Chris AKIN: @mike d: my IT Coordinator says that the greatest impact is in Primary ...

jutecht: @Tony In my opinion Bandwidth should be your #1 line iteam and there is no such thing as to much. In Bangkok we've doubled our bandwidth every year 2,5,10,20mb and are looking to double again this year if we can. The conneciton is key!!!!!

talwar: @Tony.. in HK we can get upto 1Gig , but we have 2 x lines.. a 30MB and a 10MB line and with proxy servers it works great

Chris AKIN: Jealous in Bali re: bandwidth, sitting on 2.5 mB download and 1 mB upload

Tony: wow. I cannot only dram of such high bandwidth. At our small school for MKs, we are paying $1000/month for 2MB. To even think of 5-10 or 1GB would be astronimical in cost for us.

peterwinslade from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 19 hours ago

Tony: my whole IT budget is about $60K / year.

Derek: @Tony - Agree with previous comments Look at your student numbers in determiniing your needs. Don't start a 1:1 wireless programmee without the necessary bandwidth

talwar: @ tony is that USD?

Tony: What would you all say is the MINIMUM b/w for a 1:1 program involving 400 students?

Tony: @telwar, yes that is USD60K / year

ATorris from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 19 hours ago

ATorris: Chris... ask me how we have built our own sandbox of online resources in Shanghai. I think that is your answer for low bandwidth.

jutecht: @Tony minimum bandwidth is just enough to make sure everyone can connect when they need to connect....it will depend on where you're at in the world. 400 Students I would think 2-5mb would be OK...knowing that if you dowload big files you bring the network down. :)

Derek from x.x.x.3 left the chat 19 hours ago

talwar: @Tony.. Also put in place some Proxy servers which will make the experience better

Tony: @telwar...recommended proxy servers?

ATorris: @Tony.... Bandwidth depends on what you are using and what you have inside of your own system and how robust your servers are in the school.

Jeff Holte from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 19 hours ago

ATorris: Parent education is a probable issue for all 1:1 schools. Most parents are confused about how to employ restrictions on their kids.

Jeff Holte from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 19 hours ago
