ATorris: In a session on systematizing the leading the transformation from a teaching organization to a learning organization. Mark McCallum: @geoff - yes ... this chatroom is for the NETS pres ATorris: What Seems to Work - Team organizational goals - Focusing all decisions on student learning- language and culture - have a definition of learning that is used routinely - Clear assessable standards that define how students learn, teachers teach and leaders lead. - A clear agreement and the evident that counts and a toolkit for communicating that evidence. - During classroom visits, rather than looking at what the teachers are doing, and the degree of student engagement, have conversations with students about what they are learning. oscarn: Powerful idea of having a definition of learning that is used by everyone in school, published in many languages and displayed. geoff smith: @andy - "Looking for Learning" is a really interesting way of reshaping, revisioning walk thrus as a Principal, Mike Donaldson: A similar strategy we've used is asked all teachers "what does learning look like" and asked them to send pictures of "learning" and putting up a collage in a common area where all can see jutecht: We write our AUPs in postive language...we tell the what we expect not what the don't expect. ATorris: Here is another student AUP http://saslaptops.wikispaces.com/file/view/SAS_Student_AUP.pdf geoff smith: @jeff - cool idea. i'm always impressed with how intensely serious and earnest students are when actually asked what they are learning..i like idea of videoing..next week, i'll do that with my blackberry! jalexander: @jutecht - thanks for the guidelines ATorris: i has been noted in this workshop that there is tremendous power in giving students choices about reporting (ie, essay, blog, slideshow....) based on what students say will most contribute their own learning. jutecht: For "Looking for Learning" check this blog out. Teacher just bought an iPhone and is using it to capture learning in action within his class...and sharing that out to parents and admin. http://inside.isb.ac.th/rm204/ will have to scroll down a bit. ATorris: There is- in my opinion- nothing more woeful in our schools than NOT allowing students to engage deeply with their own assessment of learning. ATorris: Everyone in educational leadership should read this: http://saslaptops.wikispaces.com/file/view/2009-Horizon-Report.pdf geoff smith: yes...it's absolutely awesome report pip curtis: I like the idea of challenging your staff to show what learning looks like. Ask them to take pictures, video, write a description etc. It would make for an interesting faculty meeting to share the evidence and then to define learning geoff smith: @jeff, thx for blog...probably shouldn't play the video while i'm in this workshop being a non-attentive bad student Mark McCallum: Is this (NETS) presentation available anywhere? I am not catching all the urls. jutecht: @geoff :) jutecht: Next session is a Cohort reflection session we're in Kaima 2 in the Garden Wing. Are we just assuming that kids are learning. Is it assumed that teachers are focused on learning rather than just teaching. Leaders job is to articulate it and be explicit about it - LEARNING! sparrish from x.x.x.3 left the chat 21 hours ago pip curtis: Learning - yeah we did that last year. It's not just a fad! geoff smith: @pip i often hear from teachers that they haven't lost their focus on learning but i think they're so caught up in planning their teaching and, as wiggins/mctighe say they are great activity planners but not great at really examining the learning that is going on ATorris: Bill is speaking about the structure of metacognition. pip curtis: UBD does help teachers to determine what they want kids to learn - I think the disconnect occurs when we don't go back to it every day. As Bill and Kevin are saying, each lesson we need to say where the class is headed and why. Not just at the beginning and end of the unit when you are planning and reflecting. ATorris: ISB... in their teaching standards has a focus on "learning purpose". All teachers are to make it clear what the learning purpose for all instructional practice. oscarn from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 21 hours ago pip curtis: Learning standards - clearly outlining what the learning purpose is and the expectations and performance outcomes/indicators/evidence of learning - do kids understand this? Mark McCallum: @sparrish I know of a situation where educator's public face (in real world) had negative consequence... out partying at nights, small community etc etc ... jutecht: @oscarn not daily but weekly. http://www.netvibes.com/isbg5 click on a teacher name to see all the blogs and the last time they posted. peterwin from x.x.x.3 joined the chat 20 hours ago pip curtis: We have digi portfolios where kids reflect on their learning - used in SLCs.
