WASC: Serving as a Visiting Committee Member and Conducting a Self-Study
This pre-conference session will (1) prepare EARCOS educators to serve
on WASC visiting committees, emphasizing the role and responsibilities
of a WASC visiting committee member, and 2) examine the essentials
of the Focus on Learning and its adaptability from a self-study perspective.
Biography
Dr. George has been the associate executive director of WASC since
1987. In addition to her knowledge of accreditation and school improvement,
her areas of expertise are curriculum/instruction and staff development.
She has been a classroom teacher, staff development specialist, trainer,
consultant, and a high school district administrator of staff development
and state/federal programs. She has worked extensively with the California
State Department of Education in the areas of program quality reviews,
the mentor teacher program, and staff development programs. She has
given presentations and written and other publications in the areas
of staff development, mentoring, and accreditation. Her degrees are
from Westminster College (B.S.), University of Wisconsin, Madison
(M.S.), and UCLA (Ed.D).

Biography
Maria Lesser is the Associate Director for K-12 International Services
at the College Board based in New York City. She has worked at the
College Board for six years, previously in the College-Level Examination
Program and the International Education Office in Washington DC. Prior
to arriving at the College Board, Maria was an educational adviser
and coordinator of advising centers in Latin America for the Institute
of International Education and the U.S. Department of State. In this
role she advised international students about higher education in
the United States. Maria was born and raised in Mexico City where
she attended a German international school. She has a BA in German
Studies from Wellesley College and is currently working towards her
master’s degree in public administration at New York University.

David Lightbody/Ted Miltenberger
(ISTA) — Drama Across the Curriculum (March 29)
It is common knowledge that teachers seek to improve as reflective
practitioners throughout their daily work with young people. In an
attempt to improve classroom practice, develop their own methods and
approaches, and strive to make learning more meaningful, practitioners
will seek new avenues within their own journey of professional development.
Drama is a useful tool in any subject teacher’s repertoire of
teaching and learning techniques. This pre-conference workshop aims
to introduce teachers to the rich potential of using Drama as a way
of learning – across all subjects and for all ages. Registration

Biography
David Lightbody is an independent theatre producer and director and
also a consultant in management strategy, innovation and leadership.
He ran his own theatre company in Scotland for seven years, producing
Shakespeare and the modern classics both in site-specific productions
and on tour throughout the UK and Ireland. David has been an ISTA
staff member since 1997. He has led workshops and ensembles with students
at ISTA festivals internationally and has also been the Artistic Director
of numerous festivals. He was appointed as a Trustee for ISTA in 2004,
and began his role as ISTA President in June 2005. In addition David
works as one of ISTA’s consultants, leading tailor made workshops
for drama departments and wider teaching faculties at international
schools world -wide. David’s most recent work outside of ISTA
has been as a lecturer and instructor at London Business School where
his work has focused on developing programs for utilizing theatrical
techniques in management and leadership training. David has a BA Hon.
in Drama and Theatre studies from Royal Holloway College, University
of London and an MBA from London Business School.

Biography
Ted Miltenberger has worked with Michigan State University for the
past ten years in developing a course applying ensemble techniques
to the classroom. He has worked in theatre education for more than
30 years, establishing theatre curricula in Madison, Wisconsin; Milan,
Italy; and Paris, France, where he recently retired as the head of
the theatre department at the American School of Paris. He was co-founder
of the International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) and is a past
president. He continues to host and participate in ISTA theatre festivals,
workshops and symposia throughout the world.
