About the PAPAYA ACADEMY
Papaya Academy is a selective, non-residential school for children aged between 6 and 12. Located near Montalban in Rizal outside Metro Manila, it currently has 150 students.
It is financed by the Kalinga at Pag-Ibig Foundation (KAPF), a Dutch charity.
It provides free education for children who live on Payatas Dumpsite and who otherwise would be able to receive none, as the Philippines has no universal free education system like many countries. Some of the parents are also involved in micro-finance schemes which recycle some of the materials on the dumpsite and makes cards, boxes, and other gifts sold at local bazaars mainly to international organisations, such as the British Women's Association. The parents are also required to help maintain the school, which usually involves cleaning or cooking one day of the week. As such, it is run as a non-profit organisation, attempting to bring a community spirit into the area through such means.
