Priscilla Bailey

Biography: Priscilla has taught ESL students in the US and Hong Kong throughout her teaching career. Serving as the literacy coordinator for International Christian School in Hong Kong, she presented workshops and trainings for elementary, middle, and high school faculty using participant engagement and research driven strategies. In addition to presenting at ICS, Priscilla has been invited to present at Hong Kong Baptist University on differentiated learning strategies. A lifelong learner, she has completed her Master’s degree in 2008 with an emphasis in language arts and TESL methods.

Title: Teaching Vocabulary Using Best Practice Strategies

Description: Through the use of research based strategies, participants will have an opportunity to try hands on activities that demonstrate how the brain assimilates new vocabulary words into prior schema. Emphasis is placed on how students learn vocabulary, activities to reinforce learning (based on research), and the process and skills to learn words in context.

Jason Bennett

Biography: Jason Bennett is celebrating his tenth year of music teaching and currently teaches band and music technology courses at AIS-Hong Kong. He earned a BME from Indiana State University in 2000 and a MEd from the University of Central Florida in 2007. Through the years, Mr. Bennett has directed ensembles and classes including marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands/combos, choir, instrumental chamber ensembles, world music, music history, music theory, and music technology.

Target Audience: Educators and administrators with any level of musical ability. Prior musical knowledge is not required.

Title: Unleashing a Giant: Integrating Music into Your School Community

Description: Music, a powerful medium that can bring about emotional and cognitive responses, has existed in every community known to man. This workshop will explore ways to make music experiences accessible to the school community, and not solely the music classroom, by providing real life examples of interdisciplinary and whole-school music projects that have enhanced student learning. Although the examples presented were designed for high school students, the concepts presented will apply to all levels of learning. Be prepared to have fun and make a little music of your own!

Althea Besa

Biography: Althea has taught at three different international schools for a total of 21 years. She has given numerous teacher workshops over the years on Writing to Learn, Portfolios and Archetypal Mythology. Last year she presented an EARCOS workshop on Transpersonal Intelligence, focusing on how to help students become more critically contemplative learners. At present she is teaching both IB English and IB Philosophy at the United World College of South East Asia.

Title: Using the Learning Log in the IB English Classroom

Description: This workshop introduces the Learning Log as a focused learning/thinking tool for literary analysis. I will offer strategies that help students improve fluency and higher order thinking, as well as acquire skills for the written Commentary. Additional focus will be placed on using the Log to enhance student reflection and transpersonal intelligence. While specific strategies will be linked to the IB Lang A1 syllabus, all of them can be modified to suit younger students.

Stefanie Bradley

Biography: Stefanie Bradley comes from a long line of Global Nomads. She was born & brought up in Asia, attending international schools throughout her childhood. Having experienced many transitions herself, she is interested in making these as positive for others as possible. She continues to live internationally and has worked in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. She currently teaches in Bangkok.

Cheryl Brown/Brooke Fezler

Biography: Cheryl Brown has been teaching in international schools for ten years with five years experience in counseling. She has been a co-lead on the international initiative for international school counselors. Additionally, she has experience in working with NGOs, multi-national and government-related organizations around the world, including managing policies in an accreditation agency to improve and maintain standards and quality of educational programs. Cheryl is currently a High School Counselor at Shanghai American School (Puxi). Brooke Fezler has been a school counselor internationally for five years. For her Masters she wrote “Need for school counselor evaluations in an era of educational accountability”. Brooke has been an advocate for comprehensive school counseling programs in the schools in which she works and has coordinated a school-wide movement towards implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program in her current school setting. Brooke currently works at Lincoln, The American International School in Buenos Aires.

Don Chamber

Biography: The presenter has taught chemistry and AP chemistry at the American School in Japan for 20 years. He writes for ROBOT magazine and this year will introduce the first VEX robot competition to Japan. He has thoroughly researched robotics and has his finger on the pulse with regard to the philosophy, vision, technology as well as the community building emphasis of robotics. He has a passion for promoting STEM through robotics.

Title: Exciting trends in robotics education

Description: This workshop is an overview of robotics education with examples of competitions, curricula and professional development opportunities. Robots will be demonstrated including ROVs , microrobots, VEX robots, Lego, Parallax, as well as others. There will be a bipedal robot as well as a bipedal robot’s best friend ( yes…the latest in robotic dogs). Participants will operate the robots themselves and will have all they need to begin a robotics program at their schools.

Jason Luke Cuthbert

Biography: Jason Cuthberth is a Athletic Director and Head of PE at Surabaya International School. He has taught physical education to grade K-12 and been an athletic director for 8 years. He is an avid fitness enthusiast and keep up to date on speed and strenght training. He has played college sports and most recently played semi-pro football in Canada the last two summers.

Kevin Desmond

Biography: Kevin Desmond is currently in his 15th year as an educator. He has taught at all levels, Grades 1-8, as a classroom teacher, a computer teacher, and as an ESOL and Spanish Bilingual Teacher. Kevin began his teaching career at the Colombus School in Medellin, Colombia. He has taught in California, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Dawn Dinwiddie

Biography: Dawn is originally from Chicago, Illinois. She has a Bachelor in Psychology, a degree in Comprehensive Nutrition and her Master of Elementary Education. Having lived in Singapore for three years and Hong Kong for eleven, she is quite familiar with Asia and its diverse people. Currently, she is teaching third grade at Carmel School of Hong Kong, where she has recently helped design and implement a successful school-wide behavior management program.

Title: Is It Friday Yet? Successful Behavior Management

Description: If you can’t wait for Friday, chances are you are frustrated with behavior, whether it is the serious actions of one student, or general misbehaviors of a few. Jin Shin Ekin

Biography: JinShin Ekin is currently in her 5th year of teaching HS visual arts including the IB and AP program at the American International School of Guangzhou, China. Originally from Seoul, Korea and educated in Australia, she began her first international teaching at the AIS of Mogadishu, Somalia. Since then she has taught at the AISD Bangladesh, ISPP Cambodia and China. Her teaching experience includes visual arts from Kindergarten through to grade 12, PYP, AP and IB art.

Mary Fish

Biography: Mary Fish teaches Middle School English at the International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo, Japan. She has also taught English and Social Studies in Kuwait and Northern Canada. In 2007, she attended the Columbia Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Summer Institutes, which inspired her to dramatically alter the way she approached the teaching of English. Last year at EARCOS, Mary presented on how she uses her own writing to inspire her students during Writing Workshop.

Peter Giordano

Biography: Peter Giordano has worked in every kind of library from the Library of Congress to a small middle school library. He as also taught English from every level from graduate school to middle school. The focus of his research is transaction theory as applied to reluctant and struggling readers.

Ann Gould

Biography: Ann Gould has taught PE, Health and Dance in International Schools for the past 23 years. Originally from California, she has taught in California, Egypt, India, Cairo, Singapore, Lima and now China. Ann tries to incorporate the creative, non-competitive elements of dance into her PE classes at the Middle School and High School levels. She holds a Bachelors degree in Dance from UCLA, a Masters Degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and earned her PE teaching credential from San Francisco State University.

Title: Hot Dancing in the Gym – Grades 6-12

Description: Students love a change in the PE routine, and including an MYP Movement Composition unit allows students to be creative and have fun in a different way. You will learn how to set up the unit, learn some simple movement phrases to teach and demonstrate, and then you will receive the assignment and assessment rubrics to go with it. I will show some sample projects on DVD of my own students.

Julie Heinsman

Biography: Julie Heinsman is a TCK, is married to a TCK and has raised two children who are TCKs. A US citizen raised in Taiwan, Julie is now working at the school she calls home. Eleonor Jaranova

Biography: Eleonora Jaranova teaches PE, is Aquatics Coordinator and is head coach of the Hanoi Hammerheads swim team at UNIS-Hanoi school. Eleonora is a former swimmer on the Latvian National Team and a national record holder. She has worked as an age-group coach in Latvia, as head coach of the Neptunes Swimming Club in Malta and as PE teacher and swimming coach in three international schools.

Title: Teaching Breaststroke from Beginner to Advanced Swimmers

Description: This workshop will introduce to PE teachers different ideas and skills to teach breaststroke from beginner to advanced swimmers. It will include a progression of carefully selected drills and activities which participants will be able to practice on dry land and in the water. You will learn hints how to correct the most common mistakes in breaststroke technique. A variety of swimming equipment will be used during the session.

Mark Johnson

Biography: Mark Johnson is a Humanities Teacher and the English Instructional Facilitator at Concordia International School Shanghai. Additionally, Mark is the Affiliate Coordinator for the National History Day Asian Region. Mark has extensive experience implementing the National History Day program at schools in the United States, and was instrumental in broadening the program to include international schools.

Georgina Martignago

Biography: A committed, motivated and experience international educator, Georgina Martignago completed her Bachelor of Art Education at COFA UNSW, Sydney where she majored in ceramics and printmaking. Georgina has taught Visual Arts internationally for 19 years teaching IB Diploma, MYP, IGCSE and PYP students in the Australia, England, China and Malaysia. At present she is completing the final semester of her M Ed at Hong Kong University where her research has focused on teaching gifted and talented art students. Currently she teaches Visual Art at Chinese International School, Hong Kong. Recently she was recognized by the IBO for her examining consistency, resulting in an invitation to attend a Diploma assessment standardization meeting in Los Angeles as well as conduct online mentoring for examiners and fulfill team leader responsibilities.

Shirley Penland/ Lisa Maren Thompson/ Becca Barniskis

Biography: Shirley Penland is the secondary curriculum coordinator and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program coordinator at Taejon Christian International School in Daejeon, South Korea. She has experienced a variety of unique and insightful opportunities while teaching students and collaborating with inspiring colleagues in the United States, Malaysia, and South Korea. Having spent twenty-two years in Asia, Shirley appreciates the joys and challenges of designing learning experiences through the lens of a variety of cultures and perspectives. Lisa Maren Thompson is the Middle Years Program Visual Art Teacher at Taejon Christian International School in Daejeon, South Korea. Prior to this position, Ms. Thompson served as an artist in resident and arts education consultant for the Perpich Center for Arts Education and Arts for Academic Achievement in Minnesota, USA. Becca Barniskis is a poet, teaching artist, freelance writer and consultant in arts education, as well as a founding member of the Center for Artful Collaboration in Minnesota, USA.

Nathalie Peres

Biography: Nathalie Peres is a Parisian who has lived in Yangon for 10 years. She started her career as a French educator for French companies and French school in Myanmar in 2001. Since 2006, she has been enthusiastically teaching elementary French at the International School Yangon, in Myanmar. She has taught in the middle school, and she currently also teaches ballet, modern dance and yoga at ISY.

Cesar Reyes

Biography: Cesar Reyes heads the MS Art Department at Taipei American School. He has taught both middle and upper school students in Taiwan and New York. He also teaches ceramics at Teachers College, Columbia University in their graduate program and is working on exhibiting his architectural sculpture.

David Rynerson

Biography: David Rynerson has taught high school English in New England, Beijing, and is now high school English department head at the American School in Japan. His pedagogy is largely based on experience in the New Hampshire Writing Program, where he was influenced by Tom Newkirk, Tom Romano and Don Murray, among others.

Title: Tools for Reflection: Metacognitive Thinking and Learning

Description: Why are students’ reflections of their own writing, thinking and learning sometimes put off until they write college application essays? This workshop will explore students’ use of metacognition to individualize and empower their own learning. We will consider metacommentary as an integral step in response and revision processes. We will go on to discuss the use of students’ setting literacy goals and periodically reflecting on their own growth, habits of mind which can inform a lifetime of learning.

Somporn Sae Hym

Biography: Mrs. Somporn Sae Hym was born in Bangkok, Thailand. She finished her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education in Singapore and Master degree in Teaching English As A Second Language in Australia. She is presently teaching grade 6 Math at Ekamai International School, Bangkok. She has created 2 levels of “Funny Vocabulary” and 2 levels of “Funny Occupation” game cards for students who want to improve their language skill. They are sold at the school snack bar where part of the proceeds go to charity and some of the game cards give away to under privileged students in the upcountry. Lately, she has created the Spinning Numbers to enhance students learning in Mathematics where she will share with the delegates at ETC 2010 in Manila. Mrs. Somporn has been teaching various subjects for more than 25 years in the elementary level.

Description: Since the spinning board is big and bulky to carry along for this workshop, I will get participation from the audiences to replace numbers that are spun by the spinning board.

Level 1 : Ask any 4 audiences to randomly select a different number from 1 -10.
Use only one different mathematical operation, except subtraction to form the lowest positive integer. Example: 9, 5, 4, 2
Smallest: (9 x 2) ÷ (5 + 4 ) = 2
Note: There are 209 possibilities for this level.

Level 2: Ask 5 audiences to randomly select a different number from 1 – 10.
Use every different mathematical operation to form the lowest positive integer.
Example: 9, 5, 4, 2, 10
Smallest: {[( 10 x 4) ÷5 ] +2 } – 9 = 1
Note: There are 250 possibilities for this level

Challenge: Provide 5 different numbers from 1 - 10
Use every different mathematical operation to form a number zero.
Example: 9, 5, 4, 2, 1
Zero: 2 – [( 5 x 4 ) ÷( 9 + 1 )] = 0
Note: There are less than 60 possibilities for this level

Remark: It is interesting to note that non mathematical inclined students or teachers can perform better than those who are good in Math. This is one good way to encourage, motivate, and challenge student(s) to think individually or work in group.

Student worked with both emerging and traditional media to create mixed media-self-portraits that expressed themselves. In our wokshop we will be sharing student work showing both the process(photos, blogs, sketchbook pages) and well as the finished product(portrait and presentations).

Andrew Tatam

Biography: I have been teaching for 14 Years after completing my BEd in Physical Adventure Education. I have taught at Our Lady of Sion Junior School (4 years), Sir James Henderson British School of Milan (3 years), The ABC International School, Vietnam where I was Director of Physical Education (3 years) and finally I moved to Thailand where I currently work as Head of Primary Physical Education at Bangkok Patana School.

Brian Taylor

Biography: After working as a Chemical Engineer Brian moved into education and has been teaching Science for eleven years in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. As Head of Science at Bangkok Patana School he is leading the department in using OneNote as the medium of pedagogy and is providing training for colleagues from all faculty areas across the school in preparation for a one laptop per student program.

Fang Wang

Biography: Wang Fang has been an IB Chinese A teacher for ten years. During these ten years she worked in various school settings including a local Chinese government school and international schools. She has gained abundant experiences in developing the IB Mother Tongue Programme. As an experienced and professional IB trainer, Fang has run many successful IB regional workshops. Since 2005, she has worked as a moderator for MYP Chinese A and has been working with the IB Online Curriculum Centre as an Online Faculty Member for Chinese A since 2003. Fang holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Literature and a Master’s degree in Bilingual Education.

Topic: Teaching Chinese Literature
Title: Teaching Chinese Literature in an International School

Description: This workshop will define the features of teaching Chinese Literature in an international school. Participants will be provided with hands-on good practices that focus on the fundamental structures of designing a Chinese Literature course in both middle school and high school. Successful class activities will also be shared in audio and visual forms in order to give all the participants a full image of literature teaching.
