Paideia National Conference: The Culture We Deserve

June 20-21, 2024 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA
In his 1989 collection of essays titled The Culture We Deserve, Jacques Barzun defined culture as “the traditional things of the mind and spirit, the interests and abilities acquired by taking thought; in short, the effort that used to be called cultivation … of the self.” By extension, every school and every classroom has a culture, whether it consists of boredom or excitement, apathy or purpose—shallowness of mind and spirit or depth in reflection and dialogue.

Although it is hard to define, classroom and school culture plays a profound role in shaping how much students learn and how much they enjoy the process of learning. Join us in Malibu, California on June 20-21, 2024, when we will explore how to enhance the educational experience by creating The Culture We Deserve.

This year, participants will have the opportunity to stay on the beautiful Pepperdine University campus, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, for a more immersive conference experience. (Video tour available at https://seaver.pepperdine.edu/about/visit/campustours/video/)

Restorative Practices for Educators (level 1)

September 28-29, 2024
Seoul International School

Dear colleagues,

Greetings from Seoul International School! This September, we will host a two-day restorative practices workshop facilitated by the National Center for Restorative Justice (NC4RJ). Our goal is to bring together educators in our region to learn more about building inclusive, just, and compassionate communities in our schools. These folks at NC4RJ are fantastic trainers and we feel that many more schools in our region can get a lot out of this workshop. The basics are provided below, but you can find more details about restorative practices and the workshop itself on our Event Website: https://sites.google.com/siskorea.org/restorativepractices/.

Restorative Practices for Educators, September 28-29, 2024
Cost: USD $300 / KRW 400,000
We expect to cap this event at 40 participants -- you can register here.
Successful completion of the course grants participants a Level 1 Trainer certificate.
